An investigative magazine of contemporary African expression that marked the 1990s and 2000s, "Revue Noire" offers a new and unknown image of the vitality of creation, modernity and profusion of the arts and artists of Africa and its diaspora. Distributed worldwide, the bilingual - French/English - international magazine plays an essential role in the history of contemporary African art, revealing a number of artists from the visual arts to photography, from cinema to dance, from fashion to design, as well as literature by bringing out a new generation of writers.
It has played a pioneering role in the field of contemporary African art, and more particularly in the revelation of African photography. The exhibition in Antananarivo is based on L'Afrique par elle-même, which has travelled from Paris (Maison Européenne de la Photographie) to São Paulo (Biennale), Washington (Smithsonian) and New York (New Museum of Contemporary Art), via London (Barbican), Brussels (Tervuren), Cape Town and Berlin... The associated book Anthologie de la Photographie africaine, de l'océan Indien et de la Diaspora (1998) and each issue of Revue Noire lay the foundation stone for a history of African photography.
