Marking its commitment to a better understanding of the history of art in Madagascar,
le Fonds Yavarhoussen has decided to enable the publication of Pauline Monginot's book on painting in Tananarive, the result of her thesis, which will be defended in 2021.
Introduced in 1826 by Europeans, painting is a recent artistic practice in Madagascar, and its history is being written in parallel with that of colonization. Yet it quickly became a tool for defining identities and social hierarchies in Merina society. Through the study of documents from colonial and private archives, the analysis of paintings and the collection of testimonies in France and Madagascar, this book, while recounting the construction of the world of painting in Tananarive, identifies the players in this history of painting and traces their careers.
A publication made possible thanks to the support of the Yavarhoussen Fund.
